+++

In the spring of 2010 het Podium voor Architectuur Schiphol and
Haarlemmermeer invited the public to nominate objects for the Architecture prize with the theme Re-use. De Meerkerk won the Architecture prize 2010, with the architectural firm, Kerssens & De Ruiter coming a close second.
The winners shared the prize: the publication (H)eerlijk werken. Over kantoren en kerken (Honest and enjoyable working. About offices and churches).

Churches are often recognizable buildings in predictable locations in the centre of a village or town. However, the district of Haarlemmermeer shows that there are also alternatives. De Meerkerk, situated in a former barn on a quiet road in the heart of the polder, draws many churchgoers every week.
Two unoccupied barns, which have been converted into a church.
De Meerkerk shows that the churchgoers of all ages feel welcome and have found a niche in the buildings. Concept designer Ben ten Hove writes about opportunities for reusing buildings and speaks with De Meerkerk about future dreams.

In Lijnden the St. Fransiscus van Saleskerk has been converted from a church into very modern office premises for Wortell ICT by architectural firm Kerssens & De Ruiter from Alkmaar. The church building and the parsonage have been altered drastically, but the church has kept its true value. The church building is still recognizable as such and radiates peace, but is equipped with al the facilities an office requires. +++
