Most Beautiful Swiss Book

Die schönsten Schweizer Bücher / Les plus beaux livres suisses / I più bei libri svizzeri / The Most Beautiful Swiss Books

The Fededral Office of Culture (FOC) organises the Most Beautiful Swiss Books competition every year. The award recognises excellence in book design and production and turns the spotlight on especially remarkable and contemporary books.

'The Most Beautiful Swiss Books' competition was established to promote and reward top-quality book design in Switzerland The competition is open to graphic designers, publishers and printers. Annually, the Federal Office of Culture receives around 400 submissions. A five-member, internationally staffed jury selects the most beautiful Swiss books each year. The competition charts current trends and tendencies in contemporary book design and production, while also looking back on a substantial and significant history.

The 19 Most Beautiful Swiss Books of 2018 have been named by the FOC based on the recommendations of the five-member jury chaired by the graphic designer Gilles Gavillet. They will be shown in an exhibition at the Helmhaus Zurich from 20 to 23 June which will then go on tour in Switzerland and abroad.

The event also marks the launch of the Most Beautiful Swiss Books 2018 catalogue designed by Teo Schifferli.

This year jury members: Gilles Gavillet (chair of the jury),  Joost Grootens, Rory McGrath, Marie Lusa and Gesa Schneider.

Our publication The university is now on air, broadcasting modern architecture, co-published by the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA), was one of the 19 books awarded. The book design is by Jonathan Hares.

The university is now on air, broadcasting modern architecture examines a key experiment by The Open University to mobilize new media environments for distance and adult education.
Eight episodes written by Joaquim Moreno, conversations with Tim Benton, Nick Levinson, Adrian Forty, Joseph Rykwert and Stephen Bayley, and contributions by Nick Beech, Laura Carter, Ben Highmore, and Joseph Bedford, offer a close reading of the course A305, History of Architecture and Design 1890-1939, which was taught through television and radio broadcasts, aired on the BBC between 1975 and 1982.
As current models for producing and transmitting knowledge are being brought into question, The university is now on air, broadcasting modern architecture traces a radical attempt at rethinking the mandate of higher education through mass media.
