The Fededral Office of Culture (FOC) organises the Most Beautiful Swiss Books competition every year. The award recognises excellence in book design and production and turns the spotlight on especially remarkable and contemporary books.
'The Most Beautiful Swiss Books' competition was established to promote and reward top-quality book design in Switzerland The competition is open to graphic designers, publishers and printers. Annually, the Federal Office of Culture receives around 400 submissions. A five-member, internationally staffed jury selects the most beautiful Swiss books each year. The competition charts current trends and tendencies in contemporary book design and production, while also looking back on a substantial and significant history.
The 19 Most Beautiful Swiss Books of 2018 have been named by the FOC based on the recommendations of the five-member jury chaired by the graphic designer Gilles Gavillet. They will be shown in an exhibition at the Helmhaus Zurich from 20 to 23 June which will then go on tour in Switzerland and abroad.
The event also marks the launch of the Most Beautiful Swiss Books 2018 catalogue designed by Teo Schifferli.
This year jury members: Gilles Gavillet (chair of the jury), Joost Grootens, Rory McGrath, Marie Lusa and Gesa Schneider.
Our publication The university is now on air, broadcasting modern architecture, co-published by the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA), was one of the 19 books awarded. The book design is by Jonathan Hares.
