on 7 November the exhibition of The Best Dutch Books Designs 2024 opened at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. We are proud to be included in the selection with two publications: Felwa by Arja Hop and Peter Svenson, chosen by the professional jury as well as by the student jury, and As far as I know, by Caja Boogers, chosen by the professional jury. Both are designed by Edwin van Gelder, Mainstudio. The exhibition runs through 4 January 2026, so pay a visit to experience all of the beautiful publications in real life!

The catalogue

As always there are two catalogues accompanying the selections by the professional and the student jury. The catalogue of the selection by the professional jury is designed by Jeremy Jansen, and the catalogue of the selection by the student jury is designed by Roza Sterre and Isa van Bussel.

Jeremy's concept for the catalogue is to give the reader the feeling as if they are holding the books in real life through the use of very many, beautiful images by Justina Nekrašaitė (The Book Photographer). The publications has pages filled with photos with great colors alternated by black & white photos. 

Hiding, not seeking

The catalogue by the student jury Hiding, not seeking is designed by Roza Sterre and Isa van Bussel. The process of analyzing the 268 submitted publications by the student jury raised the question 'what if the truest form of designing is the unseen one?'. As quoted from the jury note:

many of the most compelling works did not just simply reveal everything at once but instead offered layers: design choices that encouraged careful reading, attention to detail, and physical engagement.

This lead to their quest to wonder about all of the design choices that were never explained or visible on first look, but contribute a lot to the outcome of the design. In the catalogue you can see the way the jury inspected the books visually and physically through photos. Through text the reader is taken along in the proces of the careful investigation by the student jury and their findings.
